Buddy Radio: Lets You Turn the Dial When You’re Blue

While there are many ways to inform people about your current mood, social networking site posts are definitely at the top of the list. There are several ways to update your myriad of site accounts. You can either manually post in each and every one of them, make use of a system which auto updates all your accounts from a single post (such as Seesmic’s Ping.fm) or you could use the Buddy Radio.

For those who are always on the go, another gadget to bring along for the ride may be a total waste of space. But for those who really cannot bring themselves to manage their social networking sites through their mobile phones (basically, those who are too lazy), the Buddy Radio system may be of use.

The Buddy Radio is brought to us by the folks over at Sidekick Studios. The device looks exactly like a small, white radio but it is able to not only update your Facebook, Twitter or IM account statuses; it is also able to text and email your friends. This gives them an idea of how you feel on a particular day and is meant to inform your contacts of your mood.

All of this is done with the simple turn of a dial. The mood of the day is likely to be seen in hospitals wherein health care professionals are in close contact with the patients and have a need to gauge their daily mood.

The system is able to collect data to allow for an overall self analysis. It is able to give mental health care givers, family members and peers an idea for possible response or treatment.

This system was recently given a contract courtesy of the NHS London. The contract gave the Buddy the thumbs up sign to be used on a trial basis for substance abuse and mental health services by Maudsley and South London.

Nokia X6. The Selfridges of phones

Sometimes phones just have win written all over them.

Not literally, of course.

If someone tried writing on our phone we’d probably punch them. Or at least, imagine punching them in some kind of elaborate scenario that also resulted in us going home with the barmaid from our local who happened to be there, then going home and using some non-corrosive cleaner to clean the writing off our phone.

But anyway, in a metaphorical sense, some phones have win written all over them and one of those phones currently sites right in front of us: the Nokia X6. It’s not immediately clear why, as, despite the best lies – sorry – best efforts of their press release, the Nokia X6 is not a ’sexy’ or a ’slim’ phone. However, it is alright in the looks department, and we’re alright with alright. Where it gets really exciting though is in the two departments that we think are also going to get a lot of you excited too: the music department (ground floor, next to the lingerie) and the interneting department (second floor, next to the toilets).

First up: there isn’t a better music phone out there. That was brief, wasn’t it. But that’s honestly all that needs to be said (though more is said in this Nokia X6 review if you wants some backing up of such bold statements). Second up: with Nokia’s fab little browser, a bunch of apps designed to make linking into you Facebook / Twitter / Myspace / [insert cool new thing that we haven't heard of yet here] as easy as sending a text, this thing will make you feel more connected that, say, a plug that’s been superglued into a wall socket.

Sounds like your kind of thing? Thought you’d say that… so get your virtual arse over to these Nokia X6 deals pronto.

Nokia X3. Smarter than the average nonsmartphone

A-GPS access to the amazing Nokia Maps. Geo-tagging your photos and uploading them direct to Flickr or Facebook. Sign-up for the truly unlimited music Comes With Music Service. Instant access to all the apps and features of Ovi. High quality video recording… all of these features and options (and more, as you’ll find in this Nokia X3 review) are not, as you might expect them to be, to be found on a new high-end / smartphoney kind of Nokia. Far from it, in fact. As all these are to be found on the series 40 Nokia X3. A phone that is rocking into our worlds for the base price of… wait for it… 115 Euros. Yup, you heard, 115 Euros. Which in the mobile phone world these days is about the equivalent of what you’d expect to pay for a shoelace and some chewing gum.

So cheap in price it is, but cheap in, well, the other use of the word, it most definitely is not. The Nokia X3, in fact, is about as good a value phone as we think we’ve ever seen. Basic / cheapo phones are normally just that: some robust plastic wrapped around some bare bones technology that does your basic calling / texting / some calculatoring action if you’re lucky, but little else. Not the case here. Not by a long stretch. In fact, this is one of those phones that, when you see the Nokia X3 deals on offer, is going to make you stop and think about whether you really need a ‘proper’ smartphone at all. Do you really, for example, need a 12MP camera as opposed to this thing’s 3.2MP? Do you really need 4+ inches of screen? Do you really need anything, in fact, that this thing hasn’t got?

An interesting question indeed. And one that gives us the sneaking suspicion this is going to be one of the biggest hits of the coming months. Don’t forget, you heard it here first. And don’t be distracted by the terrible video below, either.
