Almost Disappointed: The XPERIA X10

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10I am a fan of Sony Ericsson products. Well, I’m not really a fan of Ericsson. I’m a fan of Sony. Either way, when the entire mobile phone community listened to Sony Ericsson’s announcement that the XPERIA X2 would be their last Windows Mobile based device, everyone started having their own speculations. Now that we have the truth about the XPERIA X10 and what operating system it will use, I constantly hear to collective sigh of disappointment from many people. I would be lying if I claimed that I was not excited at the prospect of the Google Android 2.0 Éclair running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 GHz processor.

Well, almost everyone expected that to be the case. The fact that Motorola was releasing a mobile phone with Éclair also helped fuel the rumors even more. But in the end, the truth of the matter is that the XPERIA X10 will be running Android 1.6 Donut. Now people are disappointed, after all, there are a lot of expectations. Still, when you think about it, the news is not so bad. Donut may not be the latest Android OS, but it is a stable well made operating system and it would still make good use of the Snapdragon processor.

Maybe it’s just me being too optimistic, but we could also hope that the X10 will, have an upgradeable OS. The only counter argument to this notion would be that if you could run Éclair on the device in the first place, why not make it the default OS? The answer maybe in the fact that Sony would prefer an OS that is already tried and tested as compared to one that is new but not fully explored. Looking back, Sony Ericsson did abandon Windows Mobile for its many development flaws and wanted to get something far more reliable.
