Combo-Breaker: Vodafone’s iPhone Deals

iphone_vodafoneDespite the entire buzz generated by the upcoming Google phone, HTC Nexus One, another headline grabbing topic has managed to snatch the spotlight away.

Now, the mobile phone industry is certainly full of tech-enthusiasts, communication visionaries and connectivity idealists who value product innovation, practicality and most of all, purpose in the many mobile phones being cast into the spotlight. Recently, all the news has been about nothing other than the Nexus One. The confirmation of the Google headset is a milestone event in the mobile phone industry, when an OS giant decides to make a phone for itself. Now that the iPhone will be released by Vodafone, the Google Phone is stepping away from the limelight –showing exactly how influential the iPhone truly is.

Anyway, the big news from Vodafone is the not the January 14, 2010 release date, the big news, is the price list. Much to the dismay of many people hoping for an aggressive price war, Vodafone has decided to play it safe and is offering plans that are not unlike what is already offered by O2, Orange and Tesco. Also, the seemingly cheap monthly tariffs will tie you up for a good eighteen months. Not a pretty picture, but that is the only plan they have that has the 32GB iPhone 3Gs for free.

Sign up for the 80 Pound, 18 month  plan and you get the 32GB model for free, 3000 minutes of talk time and the standard plan offers (1GB of data and unlimited messaging –it’s a wonder they bother to point out that WiFi is free as well).

At least iPhone is not jumping blindly into the bandwagon. Knowing fully well the common complaints of iPhone users, the UK carrier has promised that their network will provide stable speeds and fast connections. Of course, we will still have to see if Vodafone will deliver, for now, here’s to hoping that they do.

Samsung Gets A Bit Flamboyant

Samsung S7070 and S5150The term diva is a pretty popular one. Traditionally used to describe a female that is fabulous, flamboyant and in charge, the Samsung S7070 Diva attempts to embody all of those things. This phone is definitely for the ladies. Samsung continues to take aim at the female mobile phone market. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

The S7070 Diva is feature rich. It has a 3 inch touch screen and a mega pixel camera. It offers users Bluetooth, FM radio and autofocus camera with resistive display. Owners can add more memory via a MicroSD card.

The Diva is not yet available for purchase and no price point has been set. The company does plan to release the phone to the public during the early part of 2010.

There are currently two phones in this design line. The first is the S7070 Diva.  The second is the S5150, codename Olivia.  The latter is a clamshell flip phone. It has a mirrored case and the external display is decorative.

The Olivia has a 2.2 inch QVGA internal display. It also allows individuals to take decent pictures with its 3 Mega pixel camera. This particular phone is also set to be released to the general public, during the first quarter of 2010 of by March.

Both the S7070 and the S5150 Diva mobile phones were surprises to the general public. There were no promotional efforts made to generate buzz before any big reveal. The reasons why or why not, are unknown. What the public does know is that Samsung is introducing two phones aimed at female mobile users. The concept seems kind of cool and will likely appeal to teens and those who might prefer a more feminine phone. With companies grasping at ways to be unique, Samsung may have found a really simple and effective way to continue to generate sales from a proven but until recently somewhat untapped market, women.

Blackberry Pearl 9100: The Latest Addition To The Blackberry Family

BlackBerry Pearl 9100It seems that the folks over at BlackBerry have been extremely busy and productive. Recent launches of the Storm 2 and the Bold 9700 were impressive enough. Now, it seems that the company will be following those with the BlackBerry Pearl 9100. There are not a lot of spec details concerning the phone. The ones that are available are mostly speculation. In this post, we will give you those because there is not a lot yet available, directly from the company.  By all accounts, the 9100 is a similar, slicker version of the Blackberry 9700.  However, there are some pretty significant differences. The former, it looks like, will not be using a QWERTY keyboard, but instead, will utilize a SureType design.

There is speculation that Blackberry’s newest mobile phone will use a single LED flash, an optical trackpad rather than a trackball, have WiFi and run on an OS 5.0.0.350. It is believed to have 3G capabilities and is set to be one of the most feature-rich smartphones on the market. Many “mobile phone techies” are quite excited about the prospects.

There have been a few pictures of the Blackberry Pearl 9100 released, though those don’t appear to be official photographs. Some of these sites have seemingly been forced to take them down. However, there a few of them which still have the photographs up.

The Blackberry Pearl 9100 looks like it is going to be a good one. It is similar in design to the Blackberry Bold 9700 but there are some important differences. The keyboard is reportedly being upgraded from a full QWERTY to a SureType, though there is some debate about whether or not this is an upgrade. Some people prefer the QWERTY keyboard. The battery is also likely to be redesigned. As stated above, the specs have not been officially released. Much more information will be available once the specifications are made public.

2010 Looks Like Another Busy Year For Nokia

Nokia 6700 SlideNokia 6700 Slide and Nokia 7230 announced. The giant phone company introduced two new mobile phones to the market, both 3G Sliders. The Nokia 6700 and then Nokia 7230, the aforementioned, brand new handsets have been introduced to the market at low to mid-range price points. Both are being prepared for sale during the early part of 2010.

The Nokia 6700 is a pretty feature rich phone and is being sold at about €160. It offers users a 16.7 million color display, 2.2″ QVGA display screen, VGA video recording and a 5 megapixel camera. Users will be able edit photos and also upload them to the internet. It has a FM radio, music player and internal memory of 45 MB, which can be expanded an additional 16GB with the use of a microSD card.

The Nokia 7230 does not have as much to offer as the Nokia 6700 and the price reflects that.  This phone is about €60 cheaper. It has a 2.4″ display screen with 267k color display. It comes with a FM radio, alerts for messages and calls. The 7230 also has messaging and its 3.2 megapixel camera comes with a dedicated key.

The price for that the Nokia 6700 is currently at €160. The Nokia 7230 is price at €100. Neither of the phones is available for purchase just yet but Nokia is planning to have them in retail stores, globally, sometime during the first quarter of 2010.

It will be interesting to see how both phones fare when they are finally released. The mobile market is so crowded and so many products are being rolled out on such a consistent basis that it may become difficult to move units especially when some countries are struggling with recessions. Buyers, even tech freaks, are struggling to keep up. At some point, the market will undoubtedly become saturated and mobile phone companies will have to come up with ways to make their products even more unique and purchase worthy.

Internet Browsing from Mobile Phones Could Cause Data Blockades

global-data-transferInternet browsing on the mobile phones is the order of the day, as smart-phone users love every second of their constant online connectivity with a gadget that keeps them connected to the world wide web. However, according to a survey report by Strategy Analytics, the growing mobile browsing would soon be causing data jams and blockades.

This was forecasted by Strategy Analytics in their report titled “Global Handset Data Traffic Forecast for 2001-2013”. As per the forecast, the mobile phones would cause no less than a colossal 2.2 Exabytes, 84% of which will only be attributed to internet browsing, and which does not account for browsing from wireless PC cards and other wireless devices. To gather an idea of the kind of data amount that we are talking about here, it is equivalent to a mind-blowing 120,000 year time of movies with DVD picture quality.

According to Nitesh Patel, the senior analyst at the Strategic Analytics, the data traffic growth contributed by mobile phones is expected to increase significantly, as the use of smartphones and other cellular devices with features that allow users to engage in social networking activities and web browsing is gaining more popularity and finding access with more and more people. This would be significantly larger than the kind of increased traffic intensity currently caused by a scattered strength of laptops and notebooks.

Strategic Analytics have warned mobile phone operators of the possible consequences of the mighty traffic surge. As per David MacQueen, the director of the Wireless Media Strategies service, the mobile phone customers who like to engage in heavy data-oriented activities such as downloading, streaming audio and video, using various web applications and social networking services can potentially affect the performance of mobile phone networks.

Another director of the service, Phil Kendall remarked that it is up to mobile phone network operators to overcome the problem by managing the data traffic through tools like data compression, particularly of streaming audio and video, and to use the Wi-Fi capabilities effectively for the purpose. He also expressed that the pricing could also be used to relieve some pressure off the peak hours of data traffic activity.

Skins Color Changing Phones being developed

Philips eskinPhilips Research is working on a new phone feature that will enable mobile phones to change their skins to match the taste, and conform to different environment users find themselves. This according to the company will be done through the use of e-paper technology. When fully developed, users would be able to operate this feature via a push- button on their mobile phones.

According to the Principal Scientist who works with Philips Research, Kars-Michiel Lenssen, “The first application using the technology could be e-skins for small devices such as mp3 players or cell phones. However, the technology is highly scalable.”

Continuing, he said that “In the future it will be possible to use e-skins to bring new color and a new aura or ‘vibe’ to much larger equipment. Just as Philips’ Ambient experience uses light and color to make hospital diagnostics rooms far more welcoming, a large e-skin could make the concept fit for the MRI or CT scanner itself, potentially putting patients more at ease.”

Customizing a mobile phone can be done in variety of ways, especially as mobile phone manufacturers continue to add a lot of very interesting innovations to enable users customize their phones to their taste. Additions like downloading of wallpapers, themes and images continue to witness introduction of great ways users can get their mobile phones customized, the thought of having beautiful skins that can switch colors is something to look forward to.

Philips Research gives us more insight as to what the picture looks like. The company states that, “If you create a pixel with colored particles in a clear suspension, applying an electric field perpendicular to the surface makes the particle migrate to the top of the pixel, turning it dark. This is the basis of the monochrome e-paper used in e-book readers.”

For mobile phone users, the future holds a lot of exciting promises.
