Software updates are always something to look forward to, especially when it comes to relatively new devices. After all, most updates not only fix existing problems, but more often than not, they come with additional new software capabilities and features that extend and expand the overall usefulness of a smart phone.

The Satio will be getting some interesting new tools as well as a few graphical improvements for those who would be pointing their phone browsers at the official Satio website by Sony Ericsson (use the update service command).

The big new addition here would be the additional WVGA quality recording for the Satio’s amazing 12 mega pixel camera. The snapper already comes with video LED lights, Xenon flash, auto focus, smile and face detection and geo-tagging. The new high resolution video has definitely made the Satio an impressive media phone.

Of course, all those good videos are nothing if you cannot show them off. The update will also give users better Facebook integration with a new app found in the Sony PlayNow menu. Even better is that addition of instant image uploads to Facebook and instant video uploads to YouTube –making that WVGA patch pretty useful.

This impressive set of new updates for the Satio certainly shows how far this Symbian smart phone has gone. Back in 2009, the Satio got a lot of publicity from Sony Ericsson’s massive marketing campaign –a powerful marketing boost that still had the Satio fall flat on its’ face as it suffered from sudden firmware problems that got it suspended from sales.

Sony Ericsson was still able to save the device by bringing out a patch to fix the errors and have the Satio back on shelves just right before the holidays.

Read more about the details of the Satio update patch on GSM Arena.

Okay, everyone take a deep breath.

Before we start jumping off to conclusions about a new, PSP phone coming our way, the only thing that Sony CEO Howard Stringer has announced is that the company is working on a new “touch screen device” that features web services and more features.

It sounds vague, but hardly anything we can pin a “PSP Phone” tag on.

This is the big headline at Know Your Mobile (sourced from Know Your Cell) and while we are all thumbs for an impressive Sony smart phone that actually plays UMD games –there is not real announcement yet and this is not the time to start making rumors about it.

Though on a side note, we would really, really want to see the Sony PSP Phone made.

The news here however, is that Sony is working on something new. The fact that Apple is being mentioned in a context of comparison places the possibility of two things: first a device that is pretty similar to the iPod Touch which would mean that the old Sony MyLo would be making a comeback in an entirely new form. Or second, Sony is planning to launch its’ very own touch screen tablet device –a solid possibility since Sony’s VAOI team has already been working on some pretty impressive mini-net books.

Well, since we are on the topic of a potential vaporware with the PSP Phone, here is a quick rundown of things that we would actually like to see if the device ever gets made; first off, dual analog sticks for better gameplay control, a built in camera (unlike the Chotto Shot accessory) and of course, a hot swappable SIM reader and support for 3G connectivity. Anyway, that is enough wishful thinking for now.

Sony Ericsson is finally getting ready to release its Vivaz and Vivaz Pro handsets, with the Vivaz Pro featuring an impressive-looking QWERTY keyboard arranged in four rows. Handily the keyboard also slides out and, unlike its sibling Vivaz device, has the integral keyboard that only serves to add an extra two millimetres to its overall thickness. In other terms the Vivaz Pro is almost identical to the Vivaz with one big difference coming in its integral camera which has 5-megapixels to the Vivaz’s 8. It does, however, have Touch Focus, geotagging as well as smile and face detection to name but a few useful features.

As a 3G phone the Vivaz Pro has excellent connectivity through GPRS, EDGE Class 10, WLAN Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB. It also features a decent 75 MB of internal memory storage space which can be bolstered to around 16GB via a MicroSD card. The display measures 3.2 inches and sports a TFT touchscreen with a 16 million colours, 360X640 resolution. The pictures are extremely sharp and vivid as well, and the Vivaz Pro supports a wide range of apps including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter as well as supporting MMS, SMS and e-mail. The standard Li-Po battery gives a very reasonable potential talktime of just over five hours.

The Vivaz, as stated, has a slightly better camera than the Pro boasting 8-megapixels and also featuring an LED flash – vital for those all-weather shots – although the flash could ideally be more powerful. Like its sibling Vivaz Pro also has smile and face detection as well as picture geotagging, though naturally the lower camera quality does put some pinch on snapshots. One slight downside is that the camera doesn’t have any lens protection, which could cause a problem after any harsh outdoor usage

Structurally speaking the phone is also quad-band with full GSM support, and has a MicroSD card slot that enables a memory upgrade of around 16GB. The standard Vivaz package features an 8GB card to get users going. The Vivaz is also smaller than it had seemed in promotional photos, and actually slides very comfortably into the jacket or trouser pocket. At a very modest 97 grams it has a real size and weight advantage over the majority of the competition – particularly when you take its wide range of features into account. It is also very ergonomically designed and user-friendly with the screen taking up the majority of the device with the call keys located to the side and the menu in the middle.

Despite the otherwise impressive screen it can be difficult to read clearly in direct sunlight, although is better than its comparable competitors such as the Nokia 5800. Also, the device has no auto-lock feature, making the display prone to accidental presses during calls – making it mildly irritating at times, especially during business calls. It is to be hoped that Sony Ericsson’s future software updates will resolve this issue. The design is smart, although the display – along with the black plastic that surrounds it – are magnets for fingerprints, making it look fairly grimy after a few calls despite fitting very naturally into the hand during both calls and messaging.

The call performance of the Vivaz was good, with no reception problems at either end and a very loud and clear earpiece that gave absolutely no interference. Unfortunately the Vivaz does not feature either voice dialling or smart dialling which could come in very useful and are, in fact, featured on other Symbian versions. It also features the standard Symbian phonebook, which is quite excellent with almost unlimited capacity and excellent usability. Contacts can be arranged by either family or names, and contacts can be searched by gradual typing. Personal ringtones and videos can also be allocated to individual contacts as well should you feel so inclined.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is one of the most interesting phones expected to be released this year, and while it was already known beforehand that the Symbian smart phone with HD video recording would be having a version with a keyboard, it was certainly a bit of a surprise to see the device unveiled during the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, Spain.

Sony Ericsson announced the Kanna at a time when the Vivaz was still known as the Kurara. Originally, it was meant that the Kanna would have the same exact specifications of the Kurara with the addition of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Naturally, we expected the new Vivaz Pro to be the same.

Mostly, the Vivaz and the Vivaz Pro are similar in specs, the only thing different is the digital camera on the devices. The Vivaz has an 8 mega pixel camera; the Pro only has a 5 mega pixel camera. This change is pretty big, despite both phones having a 720p HD video recording capabilities, the Vivaz’ biggest selling point is that it has an impressive camera.

The Pro will come in two colors. The first is the standard white and silver color scheme that has been seen in many images of the Kurara. The second is a heavier looking, more serious black finish. In both devices the keyboards are darker (though more significantly so with the black version). It is expected that the Vivaz Pro would be launched during Q2 of 2010.

Aside from the Vivaz Pro, Sony Ericsson had a couple more surprises in the MWC. The XPERIA X10’s variant phones X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro also appeared during the event (the X10 Mini was first reported as the XPERIA Robyn).

Read more about the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro and see the close up images of the device at the SEMC Blog.

Many phones these days are geared specifically towards music, because music is such a big part of people’s lives. Whether it be showing your friends a new song you brought from the store, or playing music for your own enjoyment, there are plenty of reasons why people want music on their phone, along with applications do help with music.

The new phone from Sony Ericsson, the Xperia Pureness is designed to be used with all types of music, as well as being able to function as a business phone or personal phone. The phone comes with a built in music and video player, allowing you to play songs and videos you can download from the Sony Ericsson store.

The videos are played in high definition, giving you great quality pictures and great for long journeys or other times where you need to pass time. The phone comes with a built in program called Track ID, which allows you to learn the name and artist of any song you hear. You basically hold up the phone to a song that is playing on the radio or TV for a few seconds, and the phone will search through hundreds of thousands of song listings and fine the one it matches. You will then be present with the name of the song, the artist and the album.

The phone features Bluetooth connectivity which allows you to connect with friends and family. This is great if for instance you have recorded a new song and want to share it with people you can just Bluetooth it over instead of having to send it though the computer. You can have a look online to see what Xperia Pureness deals are available.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be Sony Ericsson’s first foray into Android technology. They have created a feature-rich phone which has very impressive specs. Androids are becoming more and more popular with many mobile phone manufactures interested in incorporating its technology into their phones.

The Xperia X10 is a pretty impressive mobile phone. It has a large display WVGA display screen at 4 inches. The resolution is 480×854 pixels. It shows more then 65,000 colors and is a capacitive touch screen. The 65k colors is a bit paltry especially for this nice of a smartphone. Even still, the size of the display is really nice and the resolution is still decent. It utilizes a 1500 mAh battery.

The phone’s digital camera is 8.1 megapixels which is of incredible high quality. It gives users the ability to stabilize the images they capture on the phone and also has auto-focus abilities, LED flash geo-tagging support, smile detection, facial recognition and digital zoom. Individuals will also be able to record video.

The Xperia X10 comes with a lot of memory at 1GB. More can be added via the phone’s microSD slot. The phone also comes with Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. It runs on an Android 1.6 OS.

Overall, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 looks like it is going to be a very good phone. It has an impressive amount of features including its feature-rich 8.1 megapixel digital camera and video recording capabilities. Its screen is large at 4 inches and it has WiFi and Bluetooth. It is Sony Ericsson’s first attempt at incorporating Android technology in its phones and it looks like they wanted to go all out. They have designed and manufactured a pretty impressive mobile phone that has generated a ton of interest because it is the company’s first Android Smartphone. People will be looking to see if it becomes a success or if it will crash and burn.

Christmas is just around the corner and will come and go soon enough, making way for a new year of broken resolutions and bad weather. But despite the bleak winter months ahead 2010 promises to be a good year for mobile phones with some truly jaw-dropping handsets set for release in the first few months alone. Two of the most hotly anticipated phones set for release in early 2010 are the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and the Nokia N900.

The Nokia N900 will see a move away from Symbian by Nokia, and some have heralded it as the dawn of a new era as the Finnish company moves to a far superior and advanced OS: Maemo. Unfortunately Nokia has revealed that the N900 will be the only Maemo phone that they will release next year and that Symbian is very much still part of their business plan. While some have taken this as bad news, it actually makes the N900 all the more special.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on the other hand, will make use of the highly popular and already well established Android and will be the first phone to combine this with the speed and power of a 1GHz Snapdragon. With Android 2.0 Eclair available it is a shame that Sony Ericsson has opted for the older 1.6 Donut edition. Despite this, Sony Ericsson has worked wonders with the X10 through the use of their own Nexus interface that takes the whole Android experience up a level. Combined into this interface are Sony Ericsson’s new Mediascape and Timescape features. Timescape combines information from a wide range of sources such as messages, emails and social networking sites to provide a more intuitive interaction with your phone contacts, rather than having these services disjointed and unorganised.

While there is a trend towards this sort of functionality among many phone manufacturers today, Mediascape will offer something new by attempting the same sort of thing with multimedia. Combining music and video from a range of sources such as PlayNow and YouTube, Mediascape should promise to revolutionise mobile phone entertainment.

As for Maemo; the Linux-based OS is raising eyebrows due to its groundbreaking web-oriented design. Phones making use of Maemo, which for the time being will unfortunately only be the N900, should completely change the way in which people access online content on their phones. With multi-tasking screens and a novel new browser the N900 is certainly one for the web surfers.

For anyone holding out for buying a new touchscreen phone in the New Year the choice is a tough one, but certainly falls between these two phones. While the N900 will offer exceptional web browsing the Xperia X10 will offer a better all round experience and that’s probably the deciding factor, for me at least.

Be on the lookout this December for Susan and Sunny. Who are Susan and Sunny? More appropriately what are Susan and Sunny? They are brand new phones brought to you by Sony Ericsson. The official names of the phones are J10 and J20. One of the special things about these phones is that they are from the GreenHeart series. This simply means that they are 50% recycled plastic. Both of these phones are waterproof as well.

Sunny is a classic slider phone while Susan is a stick type phone. Both of these new phones feature a QVGA screen as well as a 5.0 megapixel camera and a GPS. These models were recently leaked onto the internet showing little of the specs but none the less the word is out and many people do not seem to like the design or the name the phones come with. Only time will tell for sure just how good these phones really are, will the voice of the people rise and put a crashing halt to these new phones?

The platform of these phones is not your common garden variety A2 platform; it is something new and unique. Many people are calling it an A200 platform. Susan comes with a new “Home Key” rather than just your standard activity-menu screen. If you get the chance to check out the screen you will see all new icons at the top of the window and three new soft keys at the base of the window. Be aware however that Susan and Sunny are just codenames for the phones they are not the official names.

Whatever the case may be with the J10 and J20, we will simply have to wait until the release in December and see for ourselves.

I am a fan of Sony Ericsson products. Well, I’m not really a fan of Ericsson. I’m a fan of Sony. Either way, when the entire mobile phone community listened to Sony Ericsson’s announcement that the XPERIA X2 would be their last Windows Mobile based device, everyone started having their own speculations. Now that we have the truth about the XPERIA X10 and what operating system it will use, I constantly hear to collective sigh of disappointment from many people. I would be lying if I claimed that I was not excited at the prospect of the Google Android 2.0 Éclair running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 GHz processor.

Well, almost everyone expected that to be the case. The fact that Motorola was releasing a mobile phone with Éclair also helped fuel the rumors even more. But in the end, the truth of the matter is that the XPERIA X10 will be running Android 1.6 Donut. Now people are disappointed, after all, there are a lot of expectations. Still, when you think about it, the news is not so bad. Donut may not be the latest Android OS, but it is a stable well made operating system and it would still make good use of the Snapdragon processor.

Maybe it’s just me being too optimistic, but we could also hope that the X10 will, have an upgradeable OS. The only counter argument to this notion would be that if you could run Éclair on the device in the first place, why not make it the default OS? The answer maybe in the fact that Sony would prefer an OS that is already tried and tested as compared to one that is new but not fully explored. Looking back, Sony Ericsson did abandon Windows Mobile for its many development flaws and wanted to get something far more reliable.

The Sony Ericsson Aino is one of the new media user centered phones to hit the market this year. Featuring in the mid range of the price spectrum, its striking appearance and top class features are bound to create an impression. It is likely to hit the market sometime later in the fourth quarter of this year.

Featuring a full touch screen, the Sony Ericsson Aino is easy to navigate through. The 15.5 mm thickness is one of its biggest disadvantages, as this makes the phone quite bulky for a phone of its class. This along with the fact that it weighs in at 134 g, makes it difficult to stash the Sony Ericsson Aino away in your pocket or in a small bag. Even if you manage to stash it away, it is guaranteed to weigh you down! The TFT touch screen however is relay good as it allows up to 16 million colors to be displayed. This screen measures 3 inches diagonally. Viewing media on the display is a treat for the eyes, and you can even rotate the screen to view the same media in landscape view if you want to.

As this phone feature a slider form factor, you have to slide out the keypad from below the screen. This keypad is quite easy to use as the keys and nice and large, well apart from each other. The onboard memory of 55MB is quite useful as you can run graphic applications without having too much of a problem. To store an extensive music library, you have to make use of the microSD memory card slot as you can use this to expand the memory up to 16 GB. The range of connectivity options complete the utility of this phone as you can access GPRS, HSCSD and Wi-Fi networks. The Sony Ericsson Aino has an 8MP camera too!

If you’re thinking of getting the Sony Ericsson Aino then check out some of the great deals online. With so much to choose from it can get confusing which is why websites like Best Mobile Contracts are so helpful as they compare all the deals for you.
