Getting a Closer Look at Windows Phone 7

That demo at Tech Ed 2010 totally blew us away.

Yes, Steve Ballmer put up a breathtaking show at the Mobile World Congress that showcased what we now consider to be the most revolutionary mobile platform ever made. But while we were too busy in MWC coming to grips with the reality that Microsoft actually made a great operating system for the mobile phone, by the time Tech Ed arrived we thought we knew what to expect.

We are so happily wrong. Eric Rudder and company once again showed us that they are truly living up to the concept that the “phone is not a PC”. The user interface is as impressive as ever, moving impressively smooth (though a couple of momentary visual hiccups were noticeable) and featuring plenty of active, real time updating tiles whose content are fully customizable.

You can literally turn anything in your phone into a tile, from Facebook updates on a single specific contact to web pages, you can set your phone’s home screen to show exactly what you need (though you will need to wait for the internet download time in order for the tiles to refresh –so expect to see some sluggishness if you are on a slow network).

The new games feature is also impressive. Again, these are not hardcore game titles. Despite the fact that Microsoft’s XBL service is available there is still a limit to the number of actual hardcore gaming titles that can be played on a mobile device. Anyway, the demo showed how one can play the same game on the PC, the Xbox 360 console and the Windows Phone 7 device. For a developer, this is major advantage as the programming for all versions are pretty similar and you can even share code across all platforms.

LG’s WP7 Panther Revealed

Well, we have not actually seen the WP7 mobile platform running on LG’s latest prototype, but what we have is pretty interesting.

LG and Microsoft have finally decided to come out and show us all what the very first Windows Phone 7 smart phone might actually look like. The LG Panther is a sleek looking smart phone with a large capacitive touch screen and a spiffy slide out keyboard. Yep, that’s right. The new WP7 device follows the originally announced type 2 chassis from last week.

For those who missed the podcast from ZDnet, it turns out that Microsoft has narrowed down the types of smart phones that can use the new OS into three basic types. The type 1 is a traditional smart phone look just like the Apple’s iPhone. The second is a more specialized smart phone that comes with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The third uses the candy bar format.

As you might have guessed, the LG Panther comes with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. While you might think that this will make the device pretty thick, it is only a little stubbier than the iPhone. It is impressive how LG has managed to make the device so thin –though we hope that it does not feel a little too thin when you slide out the pad.

So far, no word has been given as to what other specifications this new phone will be having. We do know that Qualcomm chips will be running the new platform so we are expecting to see either the 1GHz Snapdragon or even a faster dual core model. Images show a 5 mega pixel camera with LED flash as well as some control buttons up front.

LG GD910 allows you to make phone calls from your wrist

LG GD910LG have released their new phone, titled the GD910 Watchphone. Built on the principle of bringing high tech gadgets you might see in films to reality, LG have made the new watchphone famous, with its many features and gizmos. As the phone is handmade, it is only available in small batches when it comes in, meaning you have to be quick to order yours once they are available.

Retailing at £500 they are not the cheapest buy, but for what you are getting it is a good price. The watch phone comes complete with voice recognition software allowing you to control the phone without actually touching it. For instance if you are driving and need to make a phone call you can simply say into the built in microphone who you want to call followed by “call”, and it will automatically start dialing after you confirm. This gives you amazing freedom, and it stops you from having to take your eyes off the road.

Using a phone whilst driving also saves you from having to use wireless Bluetooth headsets, which are legal, but as they are lodged into your ear they can often block out important sounds from the road you may need to hear in order to keep safe. The phone also is fully water proof, so if you ever get caught in the middle of a rainstorm it will not be a worry for you if you get it wet. So if you want to get your hands on one of these phones wait around until a batch arrives in your local area, or check online to see what GD910 deals are on offer.

Is The LG GW990 A Game Changer?

LG GW990The LG GW990 is scheduled to be in retail stores some time during the third or fourth quarters of 2010. This next generation handset has generated a ton of buzz, interest and discussion. It will be one of first phones of its kind available for sale.

The GW990 is a mobile internet device that runs on the Linux based Moblin 2.1 operating system. It has a huge 4.8 inch full touchscreen display with 1024 x 480 resolution. It supports LTE 4G Tech and has a 2.13:1 aspect ratio. It combines the ability to peruse or surf the internet and the performance of a personal computer with the smartphones’ mobility according to a statement made by LG.

The phone comes with 512 MB Ram and 16 GB flash memory.  Individuals are able to purchase more memory if they need it and add it to the phone via the microSD card slot. As stated above, the phone will run on the Moblin operating system and is a 3G Network handset. It will be powered by an 1850 mAh battery.

The LG GW990 mobile phone was recently demoed by Paul Otellini during his Intel CES talk. It was the first such demonstration and has helped generate a ton of interest and excitement in the new LG MID.

The LG GW990 wont’ hit stores into the latter part of this year (2010).  However, there is already a ton of buzz and excitement concerning this phone. It looks really impressive based on its specs. However, most people realize that specs never tell the entire store. The phone will ultimately be judged based on how well it operates. That being said, the 4.8 inch screen is pretty unbelievable. Many handset displays aren’t half that size. Also, the PC-like features also seem really promising. LG is touting the handset’s ability to perform many of the functions of a PC. It looks like we will just have to wait and see if form successfully translates into function and what GW990 deals will become available.

The Basics Only: The LG GS200

LG GS200The LG GS200 is a basic mobile phone on the lower end of the price spectrum. At only $130, it is an affordable option for individuals not looking for a heavily featured multimedia phone. These tend to be more expensive and many people, especially in this economy, may not be interested in paying hundreds of euros or dollars to have the latest mobile phone. Some individuals prefer cheaper options as long as they are able to dial out and receive calls, they are happy. The LG GS200 will ensure that individuals are able to do that plus a little bit more.

The GS200 comes equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera. This is one of the least impressive phone cameras on the market. Many of the better ones have at least 5.0 megapixels. There are rumors that the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will have a 8.1 megapixel camera, talk about impressive. It is however worth mentioning that this particular phone will cost nearly 3 times that as the GS200, so one definitely gets what they pay for. A 1.3 megapixel camera is a good enough to take pictures.

Users will also be able to record videos. It has a 2 inch LCD screen, which is an ok size. Individuals will be able to add up to 8 MB of memory via the phone’s microSD card slot. It makes use of a rechargeable Lithium-Ion 1 100 mAh battery that gives users 6 hours of call time, music playback for 14 hours and 550 hours of standby. This candybar model comes in black and red.

The LG GS200 is a good phone for those buying their first mobile phone or those who are not interested in parting with a lot of money for a mobile phone. It is a nice, basic handset that offers individuals a camera, video and music playing features.

LG BL20 Chocolate Brings Back Style and More

LG Chocolate BL20If you have heard that LG’s new Chocolate phone has brought back the sleek and stylish look of the Chocolate series, then you have heard right. The last device in the series, the Chocolate Touch, lacked the essence of this LG series, the BL20 however, brings back the famous style and adds a little more pizzazz. The LG BL20 is decked in an all black casing with soft red accents.

The device is discreetly beautiful, but slide out the keypad and the mobile phone turns into a breathtaking work of art. The entire slide out keypad has a bright red finish throughout the keys; this bright color creates a brilliant contrast to the black surface of the BL20

LG and O2

The news is, O2 will be offering BL20 deals as they will be offering the device to all their subscribers. You can choose to switch to O2 if you are currently not under their plan, or you can opt to purchase the device as the retail price of the phone has also been announced.

Hardware and Features

The LG BL20 is more than just looks; it has some pretty good features as well. It all starts with the 2.4 inch screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The screen is able to display images and videos pretty clearly and 2.4 inches is more than wide enough for browsing online.

The device features widgets that further expand the online experience. For input, you can use the keypad or the “hidden navigation buttons” in the form of a flat touch sensitive surface (it’s below the screen with the red accents). This 3G phone offers full quad band coverage and supports 3G HSDPA (GPRS and EDGE are also present). All in all, the BL20’s features also make it a very practical device to have.

Full Touch Screens are Meh

LG GD510 PopNo internet meme will ever generate enough love for full touch screen phones (there is not a single one by the way). But it’s enough of a novelty that I wonder why no one takes a moment to poke fun at it. I do love LG, with their recent releases; I am not surprised that they are the 3rd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Still, nothing about a full touch screen phone impresses me. There is always need for buttons. Even if touch screen had texture for off-sight controls, there is so much wasted space.

Allow me to go deeper. A mobile phone is composed of six sides. Obvious, yes, but consider this, that is six potential faces for controls. The top and bottom are prime spots for placing jacks and connector ports. Sides are perfect for shortcut buttons. This is because it is so easy to reach the buttons on the sides of a phone. As for the back, well, the battery and camera usually go there. The front is usually occupied fully by a screen on most touch screen devices, but it would still have space for a couple of shortcut buttons. If you ask why shortcuts, then you have not fully maximized a touch screen phone.

The touch screen experience is composed of a series of gestures, taps and slides. There is always a series of these commands that you need to execute before getting something done. A button needs a press, nothing more. Instantly you get access to features and functions. More often than not, you can assign the shortcut itself. LG’s GD510 Pop is a cute mobile smart phone but hardly impressive. Any phone that chooses style over function needs a serious re-design. Too bad this one phone is already out on production.

LG Introduces the Solar Powered GD510 Pop

LG GD510 PopAmid a crowd of complicated touch screen mobile phones, LG has come up with something simple but attractive, the GD510 Pop. This touch screen phone has a remarkably compact and minimalist design, with only one physical button. The same button can perform different functions, which can be judged based on whether the color light in its background is either green or red. LG GD510 is just 4 inches long and 0.6 inches thick. The size of the touch screen is 3” and it is a TFT screen with 256 colors and a QVGA resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. The phone has an attractive aluminum finish, with the screen making most of the area on the front, lined by a thin bezel.

But one of the most important aspects of the GD510 is that uses solar panels on its back, which is an exemplary innovation, but this power option is secondary to the conventional charging of a standard Li-ion battery of course. Although the intent is appreciable, it remains to be seen how viable it will prove to be practically.

The phone supports, EDGE and GSM networks, but support for 3G and Wi-Fi is missing, so there is no special features the phone offers when it comes to connectivity. LG GD510 will attract the attention of people who love to listen to music on the move, and like to have a mobile phone with all the features of an MP 3 player. LG GD510 offers multimedia playback support in a variety of formats, and with the internal memory of 8 GB, thousands of music files can easily be stored on the phone. At least you won’t need an MP3 player, if you are using the LG GD510.

LG GD510 Pop is expected to be released in mid-October, and is expected to be one of the most affordable touchscreen phones with many LG GD510 Pop deals to pick from.
