iRadar coming to Android

If you’re like me then your feet are probably made of led, and that being the case, you might have made some really close calls when speeding thanks to police and their radar/laser guns. Well thanks to Cobra who claims to be the world leader in laser/radar and police trap detection technology, have released an iPhone app for quite some time now.

Well fear not Android users as the company has made it official that they will be releasing the app for the Android platform next month. The app along with the hardware unit is said to be able to detect speed traps, laser detectors, radar detectors as well as red light cameras and other forms of police traps used to lighten the pocketbooks of the citizenry.

The application will use the phones build in GPS to provide warnings of photo enforced speed traps as well as providing better all-around performance.

We’re in no way condoning speeding but every once in a while we understand that there might be a time when you might feel the need to race the hatchback beside you or maybe to put the pedal to the metal as they would say. In either way, rest assured that this system promises to provide basic police detection service for an affordable price. What is such a price you may ask? Well Best Buy USA has the device listed for $129.99 for the hardware.

Hopefully when such a device makes it to here in the UK it will be for a similar price range. Just be certain to pay more attention to the road than the phone which is alerting you about the approaching speed trap because nothing is worse than trying to avoid one evil and falling into another.

Honeycomb may not be seen on phones

Android, Droid, Honeycomb, Froyo, Gingerbread, all these names conjure images of little robots happily playing on nearby green hills as butterflies float by and half eaten applies jealously look on. Maybe not? Either way, Android is on its way to become the world’s number one cellphone software and with that comes talk about the future of the operating system.

As of now, Android is split into two different and distinct software options. Android 2.x is the software that is built for cellphones while Android 3.x is designed and geared for tablets and maybe netbooks in the future.

Even though the core architecture under both operating systems are the same, Android 3.x is one that has more features that are geared for bigger screens and more powerful processors than what you would find in a smartphone. But would such software ever make it to the smartphone?

TechRadar asked Google’s Director of Engineering of Android Dave Burke if the world could ever look to the possibility of 3.x coming to smartphones which would also herald the death of 2.x altogether. According to Burke, “Right now it’s a tablet operating system.” He did say that Google would like to unite both numbering systems which would essentially mean that one software would run on both device form factors, smartphones and tablets.

“I think that coming together is a good idea. What we’re trying to do here is make a base platform that’s so good, that others only need to add native elements in their core areas. We wanted to make the whole UI better – it shouldn’t be necessary to customize the texting widget with the Honeycomb UI. We don’t think one size fits all with Android, but sometimes changes [people make to the UI] miss the point – then again, sometimes it amazes us.”

HTC Wildfire comes to the UK

HTC WildfireThe HTC Wildfire is to be released in the UK as soon as the end of June Phones Blogged understands. The HTC Wildfire is essentially a stripped down version of the HTC Desire which will ultimately allow more people to enjoy the Android functionality dream. The Wildfire will allow users to get the most out of the many thousands of Apps without having to spend a mind blowing amount of money. OK it has a smaller screen and a slower chipset, but this shouldn’t put you off. You do get an awful lot of smartphone for your money. Incidentally it is expected to be free on a £20.00 per month contract when it is released later this year, although it is still unknown which network will get the exclusivity deal on it. Our bet is that T-Mobile will get it though. As soon as we know more we will let you know. If you want to sign up to be notified when it is available you can head on over to Best Mobile Contracts and sign up for updates. Enjoy!

S-Class Touch UI

S-Class Touch UILG developed the new 3D S-Class user interface feature in the name of S-Class Touch UI. It is found in LG mobile phones such as the LG-KM900 or the LG Arena. The LG Arena was released during the 1st quarter of the year 2009 and became LG Electronics’ flagship multimedia phone.

The launching of the user interface was done along with 3 brand-new LG phones including the LG Arena. The other two phones are LG GM730 and the LG GD900. All of the phones feature a spinning 3D cube, photos grouped by the day they were taken, and an interface called rolodex to allow users to flip through music and photos.

The main menu is a row of icons. Each icon slides sideways to reveal another icon. The rows are grouped together according to a particular category so that users can browse applications easily.

The S-Class Touch UI interface is more emphasized in the market release of the phone Arena. The phone is the first within the S-Class category featuring functionalities of a 3-inch WVGA display, sound by Dolby Mobile, TV-output, WI-Fi Capability, DivX video, and 8GB memory built into the phone. Memory cards are also compatible with the phone with a maximum of 32 GB file space.

The features of the GM730 include a location-based chat service and other windows mobile device applications, plus the S-Class Touch UI. While the GD900 is a touch phone that boasts a unique transparent keypad.

The S-Class Touch UI is a capacitive touch screen that displays its menus similar to that on a film reel. To scroll through the available menu options, the users can drag the finger across the reels to manage menu options. A cube layout is the basic display of the menu options. The 4 home screens group together different mobile phone shortcuts depending on the user’s preferences.

The display switches between portrait and landscape orientations because the S-Class Touch UI reacts with the Arena mobile phone.

Android OS

AndroidGoogle developed the Android OS open platform. The operating system was designed to give life to mobile devices and phones. The idea that inspires the operating system is to bridge technology companies with mobile companies in the effort of creating an open operating system. Any developer can update the open operating system to improve the product to benefit its users.

The Android OS comes with a software development kit or SDK. This kit is also available from Google. Developers can make use of this kit so that they can come up with new applications that are compatible with the android platform. New applications can then be added to the built in applications with Android OS to the benefit and better experience of users.

Developers can create mobile experiences with the use of the Android OS. Beginning with the standard Application Programming Interface or API within the Android OS is made easy. Developers can access a series of procedure calls that will help them create applications through the use of common Android OS elements.

The Java Programming language facilitates the creation of applications for use on Android operating systems. The applications developed under Android OS can also run on any custom developed virtual machine environment under Linux. Through this, the base of the Android OS platform can operate under a Linux based operating system with a small footprint left on the computer device. The purpose of the virtual machine is to separate applications from the core Android OS from those developed by developers which in turn improves the stability of the device.

The Android OS is fairly new in the market. There are still numerous devices that are not compatible with this operating system. However, continuous alterations are being done to make it more acceptable to many devices. Some companies such as the T-Mobile device and HTC device are looking into using the Android OS.

Palm webOS

Palm webOSPalm developed the smartphone platform named Palm webOS. The platform is Linux-based matched with proprietary Palm components.

The introduction of Palm webOS happened at the Consumer Electronics Show which was held in Las Vegas on January 8, 2009. On June 6, it was released in the market. The platform features online social network and web integration programs that are becoming increasingly important to the society.

The invention of Palm webOS is focused on its use for mobile devices. It is relatively new to the market but aims to combine contacts, calendars, and significant information that will be made available to the user at anytime, even in transit. It does not place the limitation on having to stay in front of a computer to be able to perform online activities.

Palm webOS incorporates data from the user’s phone, work, and the internet into a simple view. With this technology, the user can keep up with work and social activities.

The image that Palm products want to emphasize is the ability to simplify lives of users and to bring the best technology experience at the same time. Palm webOS is among the products set to meet these expectations.

One of the key features of Palm webOS is Palm Synergy. This feature integrates information from different sources into a simplified and logical view. The user will not need to track different calendars, separate contact books, and varied messaging applications. A single view that links to all contacts from these varieties of sources is provided.

Accessing a contact and their information is made easy. One similar contact in sources like Outlook, Facebook, and Google are recognized by Palm webOS. The contact’s information will be displayed in one listing. Updating a contact on the webOS device will automatically change and update the online accounts.

Palm webOS also supports combining messages from one person. The user can view the conversations with the same person in a single chat-style view.
