Acer, a Taiwanese international computer manufacturer has revealed to the world what looks like a version 2.0 of its older Acer Liquid A1 mobile phone. Unveiled during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the mobile phone has quite a number of similarities to last year’s Liquid phone model.

Looks the Same, Feels the Same

The Acer Liquid e has not traded in the older Liquid’s blunt and blocky look. It keeps the A1’s blocky chassis and as a result also keeps the problems of its predecessor. The flat rectangular body lacks a comfort grip and the general look does not complement the stylish new Google Android Éclair version 2.1 operating system it comes with. The bright new screen is also overshadowed by the rehashed design. It is no wonder that other mobile phones supporting the Android 2.1, such as the Nexus One, are being noticed a bit more than Acer’s new entry to the smart phone line.

Looking Inside the Liquid e

An X-ray of the Liquid e would reveal a 768 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8259 processor which is still under clocked from its original 1 GHz but should run like an athlete from the Olympics as far as performance is concerned.

This year’s Liquid offers a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive high definition touch screen. The screen size is at 3.5 inches with an 800 pixel resolution. A respectable 5.0 mega pixel camera with Auto Focus is also installed in the Liquid e and the package is completed by a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Like most smart phones, the Acer Liquid e is Wi-Fi capable. Aside from the quad band GSM, EDGE and GPRS connectivity, it also has Bluetooth and mini USB connection support. High speed internet access is also featured through a 7.2 Mbps 3G connection via HSDPA/HSUPA networks.

Thanks to the Android 2.1, a number of new apps such as the dynamic Google Earth and weather apps complement the Liquid e. If mobile phone conversations are preferred though, not using any energy-draining apps would lend the 135g smart phone about five hours of talk time. Another plus factor is due to the fact that Acer kept their phone customizations to a bare minimum.

Since Android 2.1 was not changed much by Acer, the speed while running the OS also feels liquid. The phone also boasts added SMS and MMS support for easier recall of text message conversations.

The Verdict

Acer’s press release on the Liquid e focuses heavily on the Google Android 2.1. Considering the small amount of differences the newer model has over the Liquid A1, it is definitely no surprise. It is more baffling that Acer would release a clone of its older phone just to feature the Android 2.1. If it feels like a marketing ploy, it really probably is.

The bottom line is if you are the owner of an older Liquid mobile phone then there is really no need to update to the Liquid e just yet. It may be worth holding out for a newer smart phone model that uses the much coveted Google Android 2.1 Éclair operating system with more hardware and design updates.

A recent article at Mobile Deals Compared showcased the Acer BeTouch E101. The E101 is a carbon copy of the E100, the only exception is that it’s a GSM device and the E100 is a 3G smart phone. It may seem silly, but there is a point to Acer’s marketing plan.

Still, the difference between GSM standards and 3G standards are set so differently, you will see it with the E101 and E100. As a GSM the E101 has great specs, after all, you compare it to other GSM devices. The E100 on the other hand, barely has anything to show compared to 3G mobile phones. Which leads me wondering, why the network bias?

Obviously, the market for the GSM network are folks who do not wish to spend much on their mobile phone coverage. 3G network users are heavy mobile phone enthusiasts who make full use of the 3G features such as HSDPA. Still, Acer has made a good point; it is possible to give a GSM device excellent features fit for a 3G phone. I think that this really is a wise move on the part of Acer and it will pay off by attracting a good market from the GSM crowd. Too bad they will not be attracting a similar market from the 3G with their E100. At least they have the Acer Liquid.

I’m guilty of looking down on GSM models, and in all aspects, that bias is not without basis. Manufacturers tend to forget that there are GSM users who prefer having lots of features on their mobile devices. I have seen people with really high end mini laptops with simple GSM devices. There are those who would have a game system and a 2G phone. There is not doubt that they chose a cheap 2G device and spent more for their other devices, but there is no doubt that if they would appreciate a better set of choices for GSM devices.

With a huge touchscreen, 12mm thin body and sleek black design, people have been drooling over the Acer F1 since it’s first public outing at the MCW in February. Back then, all there was to see was a turned-off shell locked away in a display case. Now Acer have turned on the lights and – so far at least – it seems the future’s bright for this phone.

Taking a peek under the hood, the most impressive fact is that the Acer F1 will run on Snapdragon. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform offers unprecedented processing performance combined with low power consumption. This is absolutely vital for the new generation of smart mobiles as there’s nothing more annoying than a phone with more gadgets and flashiness that you can shake a stick at, but a battery life that would make the Energizer bunny weep in shame. With Snapdragon devices can be “always-on”. So whether you’re using 3G mobile broadband, WiFi, Bluetooth, or GPS, you can be confident you don’t need to carry a charger in your pocket. Something that never impresses the ladies.

Other features of the Acer F1

include:

3.8 inch TFT touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixels

HSDPA 7.2Mbps

GPS

Wi-Fi

3.5mm headset jack

FM radio

5MP autofocus camera with LED flash

There’s also an Acer F1 review here. Or you can take a look at this mightily impressive video for a hint of what we’ve got to look forward to.

Another handset trying to grab market share by adding a better camera. I don’t know if it’s just me, but bolting on more megapixels onto an old model doesn’t really do it for me. Yet that is exactly what Samsung have done with their “all new” Samsung Pixon 12. It seems that in a bid to increase market share, Samsung is releasing the <a href="http://www.moby1.co.uk/phone/Samsung/pixon-12.html to compete with the new Sony Ericsson Satio which is expected to be released later this year. Overall both handsets promise to offer great image quality, but is there really much more room for increased pixel quality images on your mobile phone. I feel that we should now be looking beyond purely just megapixels. We should be looking at optical zoom, new filters, better flash quality and more besides. 12 megapixels is great, but without a high quality lens, you will not see a marked difference image quality. I have mentioned before in other posts that we may not be far off a truly universal device that will allow users to leave their digital camera at home and just take a phone out with them. However if handset manufacturers are determined to simply increase the resolution on their handsets and not offer other features, it may take us a little longer to achieve this. So can we say that 12 megapixels is going to be the highest spec? I very much doubt it!

At the MWC 2009, Acer announced a host of touchscreen smartphones, one of which is the Acer Tempo X960.
The Acer Tempo X960 has GPS functionality, a home screen based mainly on using widgets and a 3.2 megapixel snapper. The Acer Tempo X960 runs on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, which is quite a disappointment considering the fact that a lot of people expected Acer to put up version 6.5 for the phones.
Users can control their e-mail, surf the internet with ease, make use of social networks and use other such messaging features like MMS and SMS. The X960 has been designed keeping the adventurous in mind too, and have also included a GPS chip on the phone so that you can navigate yourself through anywhere.
The Acer Tempo X960 sports a 2.8 inch VGA touchscreen, and also has a physical 5 way navigation pad which enables you to get through menus with a lot of ease. The home screen, fully ‘invaded’ by widgets, enables the user to access contacts, messages, emails, weather all over the world, calendar, the web browser and the music player with just a single click. The Acer Tempo F900 has clearly been designed with the bigger view on the internet and gives you full control over internet browsing. The monstrous 3.8 inch WVGA touchscreen enables you to view a lot of information on the screen. The new easy – to – use touch keyboard really enhances the typing experience, which, in combination with the screen, gives a superb browsing experience.
The new UI of the Acer Tempo F900 makes getting through the phone a real pleasure, enabling you to access contacts, bookmarks, emails, world weather, date, time and music with the most of ease. The F900 comes with a 3.2 MPIX snapper which also has auto focus and flash. Other additional features include a voice recorder, GPS, voice command, FM radio and a microSD slot for expanding memory (upto a 16 GB card can be used).
The fully widget-based homescreen gives the user quick access to the important apps. The F900 has been designed in such a way that it can be easily used with a single hand. It also has Internet Explorer 6 which supports Adobe Flash Lite and JavaScript, and also enables access to a number of email clients. A variety of must-have internet apps are also provided. The connectivity options include 3.75G HSDPA as well as HSUPA and Wi-Fi, which will make for extremely fast and smooth internet experience.
However, the F900 does weight in at a hefty 150g, but it more than compensates with a real slim waistline of 13mm and, besides, the weight is fairly fine if the features match it!
Once it comes out, check out O2 as you may be able to get the phone on a great deal!
You can find the Tempo DX900 available with contracts for Tmobile, 3, Virgin Mobile, Orange, O2, and Vodaphone, among others.

The Acer Tempo DX900 is a very popular mobile model so there are lots of deals available out there. Investigate the deals thoroughly before committing to a contract because there are so many choices that you should be able to get exactly what you want.

The Acer Tempo DX900 is one of the best smartphones out there. A smartphone means that the Acer Tempo DX900 offers much more than simple mobile phone capabilities. It’s like a hand-held PC that can fill many of your needs, including music, camera, video and e-mail.

The Acer Tempo DX900 is such a great smartphone because it is the first dual-SIM phone that supports both 3G and 2G SIMs, giving you excellent mobile connectivity and fast web access in one model. To learn more about this, visit the Acer Tempo official site.

The Acer Tempo DX900 has a variety of mobile phone contracts to suit your needs, whether you’re considering one for your child and want to limit the minutes, or travel constantly and intend to use it as a mobile PC, assistant, office and entertainment system all in one. The Acer Tempo DX900 is also comparatively user-friendly, making it the obvious choice for people who want a value-added smartphone. The user-interface is clearly marked, making accidents like pushing the wrong area on the touch-screen and logging on the Internet when you’re trying to find contacts, for example, less likely to happen. The physical design of the phone is aerodynamic too, as it fits into the palm exactly.
